Timeline Of Significant Events
There have been several activities and achievements by Ipswich. This will be discussed using a timeline of the events, and under the periods the achievements happened. These events have shaped the Ipswich of today.
1824 to 1849
This was the period where the convict settlement got established. It formed the basis of what we have today. It was also the period that the Bremer river was named by Allan Cunningham and John Oxley.
During this period, the Captain of the commandment ordered that the limestone found in Brisbane be quarried. This was done accordingly, after which an overseer was placed at the location to oversee the activities and report back to the authorities.
Between 1828 and 1829, Cunningham found a way that passes through the Darling Downs and the Driving Range. The gap found has now been given the name “Cunningham gap.”
During this period, Patrick Logan, the Captain that ordered the quarrying of limestone in Brisbane, was killed on a journey to Brisbane. He had gone to Brisbane concerning the limestone extraction. However, he was killed on the journey. Following this, the panel had to appoint a superintendent that will oversee the affairs, and they appoint George Thorn to oversee the activities at the Limestone station.
By 1840, people who were squatting at Darling Downs would cross over the Diving Range and paid visits to the Limestone. The Limestone was a location many people were interested in, and as such, it was important that the activities were overseen, and appropriately regulated.
Also, free settlers were not allowed in the settlement during this period. This meant that they have to stay as far as 50 miles away from the settlement.
Following this period, Limestone became a regular visiting place for many settlers. Also, by 1842, the Moreton region was opened up to free settlers. This was a turnaround in the history of the settlement.
1850 to 2009
This marked the period when the art school was established in Ipswich. This was important because it gave learning advantages to members of Ipswich who wanted to improve their art skills.
By 1858, the 2nd Wesleyan church was also built. This was located in Ellenborough street and it replaced a slab chapel. These churches formed some of the architectural designs in Ipswich.
By 1860, following agitations and movements, Ipswich was finally named a municipality, having its own government, and boundaries guiding its activities. This was published in the relevant gazettes. This period marked a significant one in the history of Ipswich because, till today, it is celebrated. This is because the concept of municipality gives a state its own accord.
By 1999 The University of Ipswich campus started operating at full capacity. This was yet another important moment in the history of Ipswich.
2000 – Present
By 2000, the commerce chamber of Ipswich celebrated its 100 years of being in operation. The sector has been crucial to the economic development of Ipswich.
By 2008, Aspire Apartments, the first high rise in Ipswich opened. This was also a landmark.
